Explore the largest castle complex in the world on this walking tour of Prague Castle and the Royal District. Visit the ancient buildings in the company of a historian/guide and learn about the architecture of the complex and the city's glorious history.
What to Expect
Travel back in time in Prague and discover the fascinating, 1,100-year history behind the world’s largest castle complex. On this 3-hour guided walk you’ll tour imposing Prague Castle atop Hradčany Hill, and walk through its moat (now dry!) and gardens.
Marvel at the ancient buildings, constructed in numerous architectural styles that were popular over the centuries. Learn how the castle buildings were bombarded by artillery, plundered by marauding armies, and left to deteriorate by indifferent Austrian emperors.
Walk past the Renaissance Ball Game Hall, where tennis was once played by sporty aristocrats, and marvel at the vast Vladislav Hall, which was built to host indoor jousting tournaments. Head outside the grounds through Hradčany (Royal Town), as your guide points out buildings and sites of historical note.
See the Domeček (Little House), where political opponents were imprisoned by the Gestapo and Communist StB (Secret Police).
Learn about the Strahov Monastery with its ancient library that contains 200,000 volumes, and finish the tour at the monastic brewery, savoring the rare St. Norbert’s microbrew while taking in panoramic views of the 100-spired city below.
