Enjoy a private full-day excursion from Prague that takes you to Konopiště Chateau, once home to Franz Ferdinand d’Este. You’ll explore Český Šternberk castle, owned by a single family for over 20 generations, and visit the 11th-century Sázava Monastery.
What to Expect
On this full-day private tour you’ll be picked up at your hotel in Prague around 08:45 for a 45-minute drive through the landscape of central Bohemia en route to Konopiště Chateau.
Begin by exploring the residence of the successor to the emperor of Austria-Hungary, who was assassinated in 1914 in Sarajevo, marking the beginning of WWI.
The chateau was constructed in 1294, and transformed into a Baroque residence in the 18th century. In 1887 it was purchased and rebuilt by Franz Ferdinand d’Este, and its surroundings were transformed into a landscaped park.
In 1921 the chateau changed hands yet again and became the property of the state, and it was opened to the public. Explore the interior and the gardens as well. Following your tour you’ll enjoy a meal in the restaurant on site, Stará Myslivna, which specializes in delicious game dishes.
Enjoy the 30-minute drive to Český Šternberk castle, an important monument for over 760 years. Founded in 1241 it has been rebuilt a couple of times, and has remained in the hands of the original family for over 20 generations. Experience the different eras through the styles represented here, including Rococo, Biedermeier, Empire, and Baroque.
Afterwards you’ll depart for the former Sázava Monastery. It was founded in the 11th century, rebuilt, and eventually closed down by Emperor Josef II. Today you can admire various architecture styles and noteworthy details, such as the library with medieval manuscripts written in Old Slavonic, Latin, and Czech, and the facsimile of the Reims Evangeliary.
