Postojna Cave, the queen of all caves, is the best-known cave in the world. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world’s largest karst (limestone) monuments. This is the only place in the world where the underground landscape can be traversed on an electric train and where you get to meet this underground kingdom’s most famous inhabitant – the proteus (olm) – up close.  A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries, and halls, an astonishing diversity of karst features, as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for the popularity of the cave and the large number of visitors (more than 36 million of them in over 200 years). The Predjama Castle reigns over the surrounding area, not far from the Postojna Cave, in the idyllic village of Predjama. This picturesque, magnificent, defiant, mysterious, and impregnable castle has been perched up in the middle of a vertical 123-meter high cliff for more than 800 years. Its romantic appeal is further emphasized by the idyllic Lokva River, which disappears into the underground world deep down below the castle. As the only preserved cave castle in Europe, the Predjama Castle offers a unique insight into the building techniques and resourcefulness of people in the Middle Ages, who were looking for and found a safe harbor for themselves right at the entrance of the cave. During a siege that took place in the 15th century, the castle provided a refuge for its best-known and most notorious owner – Erazem of Predjama.  The legend of the courageous robber baron Erazem, who remained undefeated until one of his servants betrayed him, is still in people’s minds, inspiring and alluring as ever. It was this safe abode of his that helped the brave knight resist the besiegers without much difficulty for more than a year. Let your guide take you through these unforgettable sights for an ideal day excursion.

The cave and castle tour was a lot of fun and a nice way to see two spectacular Slovenian sights. We did not have a car and considered taking public transportation, but they are actually a fairly long drive from Ljubljana and during the off-season, there is no shuttle between them, so we would not have been able to manage it. Our driver / guide was quite entertaining and told us a lot about Slovenian life and geography as we drove through the Karst area. Both sights are definitely worthwhile to see. Predjama Castle now has an English audio tour as you explore areas of castle, which was fun to do. Make sure you do the whole tour as there are cool corners to discover. Watch your step though. The caves are truly massive and awesome. An amazing tour to experience.

The cave was definitely the highlight. We got on a train which took us deep into the cave and then got off to walk through it, about 1km or so. I was worried about steps as I have done these trips before and the ground could be uneven and hard to see where you are stepping. But that was not the case here. it was a smooth walking path all the way back to the train. The guide stopped a 3 places explaining about the formations we were looking at. definitely worth doing from my side and I've been to a few in different countries. The castle was neat too built into the side of the mountain. Lots of people the day I was there so you had to be careful going up and down some of the stairs especially where it was wet. All in all a nice short day trip.

Our group had a trouble with the car on the way, an engine stall. But our guide was very professional that he stopped the car safely, and dealt with the situation smoothly and also with a sense of humor. By the time our the tour resumed with a different car, I felt a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere within the group. It turned out to be one of the best tours I had ever. From safety perspective, it’s better not to have any troubles at all. But sometimes they can happen, and I think the guide and the company demonstrated well that swift response and sense of humor really make a difference. :)

We went to the caves, cave castle and Lake Bled in a day. A long day, but really good. Lake Bled was amazing. Our guide/driver Dado was great, looked after eberyone and kept us entertained with stories.

Thanks to our guide Dado for this superb tour, such magnificent places, it makes you want to return to Slovenia! Thanks Dado!
