We had a great tour with Ivo and Ze to the Douro valley. We left Porto around 8:15am via a couch bus. There can be up to 35 people on the tour at once. After around an hour we stopped in Regua for coffee and a bathroom break. Along the way Ivo told us the history of the valley and port wine - it was a great and funny introduction! Once we arrived at the first winery, we were split in two groups which was nice. Half went on a boat on the Duoro River and half did a tasting, then we swapped. The first tasting was two ports. At around 1:30pm we made our way to the second winery, a cooperative, where we had lunch. You can pick from three options and they had different dietary options too. Wine was free flowing during lunch. :) After lunch at the same place you try three different ports and an olive oil. I loved the explanation from the winemaker! Ze was a very safe driver considering how steep and narrow the roads are! Thank you for an amazing day in Douro 😍

Overall the trip was great. The biggest downside was that they didn’t follow the itinerary that was listed and chose one that really impacted the quality of the tour in terms of matching the clients energy levels and expectations. Instead of a winery, then lunch, and THEN the boat tour, we went directly to the boat. So we spent 1+ in a van then another hour on the boat. The views were beautiful of course but because it was cold and we were all a little tired, it wasn’t nearly as enjoyable as it could have been. A little bit of wine and some blankets on the boat would have made it much better and feel more welcoming after driving. Even better would have been the itinerary listed on the website. Needless to say everyone on the tour was ready to sit in a comfortable warm place with some beverages when the time came. Otherwise, the wineries were great, the food was ok, and the winery tour guides were very knowledgeable.

Our guide Maria was amazing. She was so knowledgeable and just lovely all round, definitely the highlight of the trip. She stopped a few times to make sure we could get pictures of some of the beautiful view points and was able to answer so many of our questions. The first wine tasting we had was at a cooperative with a lovely lunch provided. I didn’t love this particular wine tour mainly because the host for this location talked about all the wines first then let us try them, would have been better to try them as she was explaining so we knew what she was talking about, but this may have just been my own attention span limitations :) Second port tasting location was beautiful, the host Paulo gave us a very in depth explanation of each wine we were tasting and answered all our questions. The boat tour was also lovely and picturesque. A nice way to end the day! I would recommend this tour with Maria, we had an amazing time!
