Full description
Get off the usual tourist trail on a 3-hour 4WD tour of the Sete Cidades (Seven Cities) region of the Azores island of São Miguel, departing from hotels or the cruise ship terminal of Ponta Delgada. Explore the west side of the island and the Massif of Sete Cidades, where the volcanic craters gave rise to numerous lakes surrounded by lush vegetation, each with its own unique beauty. See lakes such as Empadadas, and Canário Lake, and the emblematic blue-green waters of Sete Cidades Lake. There are several viewpoints along the way, such as Carvão, and Vista do Rei, where you can contemplate the landscape. Take the most dramatic dirt trail to the volcano cone. Then, go inside the crater to the small village for a coffee. Off-road again, drive around the lake edge, passing a small peninsula covered by beautiful trees and flowers. Stop to enjoy the birdsong. Continue to the belvederes of Santiago Lake and Cerrado das Freiras for the last chance to capture the wilderness on your camera. Return to Ponta Delgada by the main road, lined with beautiful hydrangeas.

    Wonderful scenery – highly recommended

This is a great way to see some of the very beautiful crater lakes on Sao Miguel. We had a hire car for our week in the Azores, but still went with Seazores so that we could take in the view and not worry about traffic/parking/etc. Plus, given it’s a 4x4, the trip takes you on some scenic roads that the hire cars just can’t handle. Our guide, Natasha, was a delight. Friendly, knowledgeable, and so keen to help us make the most of our trip.

Fantastic way to see the Sete Cidades Crater Lakes!

We had a great time with Jose on this drive along the rim of the crater. He stopped wherever and whenever we wanted, as long as it was safe to do so. We had 6 in the vehicle, which was a little tight, but we didn't mind since we all took turns moving from seat to seat after stops. That way we all had a chance to ride shotgun, and no one was stuck in the very back the whole time.

Great guide, knowledgeable, polite good english

Josep was fantastic! He is a trained and certified guide who knows and clearly explains the history, culture, flora and fauna and geology of the Azores. His pathfinder was very adequate for the 5 person private group. It was comfortable and very capable of going on the secondary mountain roads. This probably the best value tour in the Azores for those who are looking for adventure and scenic beauty in a half-day trip.
