See the most spectacular sites in the Azores on a full-day shore excursion. Combine visits to Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, and experience volcanic craters, magnificent lakes, and stunning views. Try some tasty Azorean specialties at lunch.
What to Expect
Start out in Ponta Delgada and head to the west side of the island and the Massif of Sete Cidades on this full-day 4WD safari. See where volcanic craters have given rise to numerous lakes, each with its own special beauty. You’ll see Empadadas Lake, Canário Lake, and the most-well known, Sete Cidades Lake, which has been classified one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal.
There are several viewpoints along the way, such as Carvão, Canário Lake, and Vista do Rei, where you’ll stop to admire the panoramas.
Follow a dramatic dirt trail around the top of the volcano’s cone. From here, the sea is around 600 meters below on one side and the parish and lake is on the other. Heading down inside the crate you’ll visit a small village and have lunch.
The next stops on way up are at Santiago Lake and Cerrado das Freiras belvederes. Explore the central massif of the Serra de Água de Pau, built by the Fire volcano. It’s here you’ll find the second-largest lake on the island, Lagoa do Fogo, or Fire Lake. Surrounded by endemic vegetation, it has been classified by the EC as a Special Conservation Area and a part of the Natura 2000 network.
For those who enjoy the pleasures of what nature has to offer, Caldeira Velha is an amazing warm waterfall flowing to a natural swimming pool were you can enjoy a dive (don't forget to bring your swimsuit and towel), surrounded by a luxurious vegetation! After a rejuvenating bath head out on an alternative trail to Ribeira Grande for a taste of some regional liquors before returning to Ponta Delgada.
