What to Expect
Drive by 4WD vehicle and explore the wild lakes and natural wonders of the area. Start the tour in Ponta Delgada heading to central massif volcanic of Água de Pau to visit the volcanic cones adjacent to the main "Volcano of Fire" where are nested lakes surrounded by wild lush vegetation without any humam intervention since some of them stills unknow even for the local people.
Although the tour is in a 4WD vehicle, to truly experience the best scenery, it may be necessary to take short walks along steep terrain. For this reason, take care to bring hiking boots and walking sticks if needed. You will be rewarded for your effort with incredible views and a great vantage point for observing birds and other wildlife.
Time to delight typical Azorean food and fresh fish at lunch in a restaurant on the north coast of the island.
Next to lunch you will see the only tea plantation in Europe, where the clay soil and acid offers a very pleasant aftertaste to this very popular plant.
You will also see Monte Escuro, towering at 2,946 feet (898 meters) and covered by the endemic Macaronesian flora on the way to Lombadas a mineral water spring located in a deep valey.
Not so far from there you'll visit Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande to admire a small fumaroles complex and Ribeira Grande the second city of the island named the island home due the beautifull architecture and narrow streets.
Before to return to Ponta Delgada you will pass in port of Rabo de Peixe, parish that keeps the tradition of fishing.
