See where the best rose oil in the world is produced on a visit to Bulgaria’s Rose Valley. Discover the Valley of the Thracian Kings on a visit to the Golyama Kosmatka tomb and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak.
What to Expect
The rose is one of the symbols of Bulgaria, where the best rose oil in the world has been produced since 1664. Visit the Rose Valley of central Bulgaria where the damask rose grows in perfect climatic conditions.
Within the Rose Valley you’ll also find the Valley of the Thracian Kings. Ancient Thracian tombs, temples, and sanctuaries with gold, silver, and bronze masterpieces have been found in this area.
Your first stop on this full-day tour is the Golyama Kosmatka Thracian tomb, one of the largest mounds ever found on the Balkan Peninsula, dating from the end of the 5th century B.C. Archaeologists believe they have found the tomb of the greatest Thracian king, Seuth III.
Continue to Kazanlak to explore the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, impressive for its unique frescoes dating from the 4th century B.C. The exceptionally well-preserved frescoes and the condition of the original structure reveal the high level of culture and pictorial art in Hellenistic Thrace.
Enjoy lunch in the center of Kazanlak before visiting the local historical museum, dedicated to the rich cultural heritage of the Kazanlak region, including the tombs from the Valley of the Thracian rulers.
The final stop on the tour is the small but charming Rose Museum in Kazanlak, housed in the Rose Institute and featuring exhibits related to rose harvesting and rose oil production in Bulgaria.
