Explore the marble quarries of Carrara by off road vehicle on a full-day tour from Florence. Experience the unique flavor of "Lardo di Colonnata," enjoy some free time in Pisa’s Piazza dei Miracoli, and more.
What to Expect
Travel back to the days of the Roman Republic and the Italian Renaissance on a 9-12 hour tour of Carrara, Pisa and Lucca.
Upon arrival at Carrara, explore the famous marble quarries by 4WD jeep, visiting exclusive sites not normally accessible to independent visitors. Drive to an altitude of 900 meters for breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery, and learn about the ancient and modern methods of excavating and cutting marble from the quarrymen (on work days).
After a short break to experience the unique flavor of Lardo di Colonnata (made by ageing pork lard in marble basins), ascend to an altitude of 1200 meters for even more panoramic vistas. Then, visit one of the underground quarries.
Continue to Pisa to explore one of the most renowned piazzas in Italy. Marvel at the monuments of the Piazza dei Miracoli, including the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Cemetery and Cathedral (a ticket to look inside is included).
Next, drive to Lucca on the coast road from Florence. Discover distinctive art and Renaissance architecture in the walled city as you explore its gates and ramparts. Use your free time to walk a section of the walls for wonderful views over rooftops, alleys, towers, and palaces.
End with a visit to Piazza Anfiteatro. Admire the small garden of trees atop Guinigi Tower, and the Campanile and façade of the Cattedrale di San Martino (Lucca Cathedral). Wander down one of the city’s typical streets, lined with antique shops.
