Top 5 Pergamon Museum exhibits that aren't the Pergamon

The Pergamon Altar itself is, unfortunately, closed for renovation work until 2019. Is Berlin's museum of monuments still worth a visit without its title attraction? Absolutely! Here are five ancient treasures just as likely to amaze!

Ishtar Gate

The royal blue gateway was once used to lead spring festival processions from ancient Babylon. It takes one large room and an entire hallway to do the imposing structure justice!

Lamassu

These large Sphinxes were found in the ancient Assyrian capital of Aššur. The protective deities – lion, eagle, and human hybrids – adorned the palace of King Tukulti-Ninurta I.

Market Gate of Miletus

This former entrance to an ancient Greek agora is truly breathtaking! It was completely devasted by an earthquake in the Middle Ages, but the reconstruction is a must-see!

Aleppo Room

Commissioned by a prosperous Christian living under Ottoman rule, the ornate panels of this 17-century entrance room were created by some of the finest craftsmen of the time!

Mshatta Façade

Walid ibn Yazid reigned the Ummayad caliphate for only a year, never finishing his winter palace. Its façade is now the pride of the Pergamon Museum of Islamic Art. Don't miss it!

What People Are Saying About Pergamon Museum

Tickets a great time saver with 2 hour long queues on the day

Tickets had not arrived by email within 48hrs as promised. We were already in Berlin and despite repeated attempts could not get a reply from phone calls to the company either in the UK or in Germany. The day before the visit I managed to speak to an agent in Germany. The tickets were eventually sent. I had to get the hotel to print them out. No good emailing as there is a statement in response saying the company will try to answer within 2 days. No good if your visit is the following day.

To get to the museum was very easy without queuing

I got easily to museum, without queuing, and tickets were with good price. Definately I will use this option next time during my trips.

Great to have if in town more than two days.

Thinking we might have more time to visit some of Berlin's fabulous museums we purchased the 3-day museum pass ($27). Because there was so much other stuff to do, however, we only used the pass once. The pass doesn't allow you to acquire timed tickets (necessary to avoid lines at museums like The Pergamon) and is not good at all museums (like the outstanding museum at "Check-point Charlie"). So, if you're only spending a couple of days in Berlin, don't bother. Buy the 2-day hop on/hop off bus tour with one-hour River Spree boat cruise instead.)

Really good way to spent 3 days in Berlin. Highly recommended.

My friends and I used the pass only for 2 days, since we continued traveling around. But even for the 2 days we had it was well worth it.

Knowledgeable and passionate guide, fun driving in the VW Bulli!

I bought the tour for my parents when they visited Berlin. They absolutely loved it and couldn't stop talking about all the stories they had learned about. Driving in the car was a really fun experience. The guide is an expert on Berlin history and brings his story passionately. A photobook was supplied during the tour as well, so modern day Berlin could even be compared to what the different areas of Berlin looked like throughout history. Very interesting added touch to the tour!
