Chocolate first came to France in 1615 when Queen Anne of Austria had it brought in from Spain when she got married to King Louis XIII in Bayonne. The delicacy became a culinary habit in all its forms under Louis XIV who popularised its consumption at the Court, in particular as a cocoa drink mixed with hot water.
In 1770, when Marie-Antoinette married Louis XVI, she arrived at the Court of Versailles with her own chocolate maker, who was given the very official title of Chocolate Maker to the Queen. Cocoa beans however only became more accessible to people in the 19th century with the emergence of large factories during the Industrial Revolution.
Paris is currently one of the chocolate capitals of the world.
