Discover the wonderful monuments of the Norman period at the recently recognized UNESCO World Heritage site; an extraordinary encounter between different civilizations and religions.
What to Expect
The Unesco Arab-Norman Tour will take you around Palermo visiting its cathedrals, churches and palaces; the result of a policy of religious and cultural tolerance pursued with great interest by the Norman kings: Roger II, William I and William II.
From the Royal Palace, the sumptuous residence of the Norman kings, to the splendid Palatine Chapel and Hall of King Roger, you will move up to the cathedral, Christian temple and mausoleum of Sicily’s kings. During the walk you'll hear about the extraordinary encounter between different civilizations and religions: the Latin Christian of Normans, the Arabic-Fatimid (architecture) of the Muslims and the Greek-Byzantine (the mosaics). You will also hear about the most beautiful squares of Palermo historic center: Piazza Villena, Piazza Pretoria and Piazza Bellini - where you can see red cupolas of two Norman churches: Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio, with its beautiful Byzantine mosaics, and the picturesque San Cataldo.
Please note: on Tuesdays and Thursdays the guided tour of the Royal Palace does not include the visit to the royal apartments and Ruggero’s room, but only the Palatine Chapel.
