Discover the treasures of the ancient Greeks in the city of Syracuse on this full-day tour from Palermo. Visit the important monuments of Greek Sicily in Syracuse and explore the historic center of Ortygia Island on this enjoyable historical tour.
What to Expect
Departing from your hotel in Palermo, you will take a 2-hour drive to the city of Syracuse, located on the south-east coast of Sicily. Upon arrival in Syracuse, you will visit the magnificent Archaeological Park created by the Greeks, where you can see the old Greek theatre as well as the Ear of Dionysius, the rocky cave hewn by the tyrant Dionysius to keep his prisoners. The name comes from the fact that the natural acoustics of the cave allowed the captors to hear the speeches of the prisoners even if they spoke in a low voice.
After visiting the park, you will continue on to Ortygia, the true heart of Syracuse. Here you can explore the historic city center with its stunning white buildings. You can also admire the Temple of Apollo, the cathedral dedicated to Saint Lucia, the fountain Arethusa, and the Castello Maniace before returning to Palermo in the afternoon.
