5 architectural facts about the Palais Garnier

Charles Garnier created an opulent cathedral for the bourgeois when his opera house was finished in 1875, and it quickly became about more than just the performances. Here's how the architect made being seen as important as the seeing itself!

It begins with "Haussmann the Demolisher"

Napoleon III wanted Paris' archaic streets to reflect the glory of the French Empire. To do this, he hired Baron Haussmann to tear much of the city down and rebuild from scratch.

Charles Garnier won a contest to design it

After surviving an assassination attempt outside the previous opera house, Napoleon III announced a competition to design one for Paris' new, less-secluded streets.

The foyer is huge for a reason

In creating such a spectacular foyer, adorned with marble, mosaics, and chandeliers, Garnier was setting aside as much space for socializing as for the performances themselves!

Nobody was sure in what style it was being built

While the simplistic yet grandiose design was commended, few knew for what style it was aiming. When the Empress Eugénie asked, Garnier replied, "Why Ma'am, in Napoleon Trois!"

Its dome holds a valuable secret

The cupola that crowns the opera house is a "false dome." It covers another, the space between which can retract the grand 7-ton chandelier hanging over the auditorium!

Great safe way to get to all the attractions in the city.

We got the 3 day ticket and would recommend this if you have the time. Sometimes the traffic is heavy in the city centre so it takes a while to get to attractions. This would be the same in a car or taxi though. We got the subway sometimes also but definitely felt safer on the tour bus.

Highly recommend this to see the sights of Paris.

This was booked as a birthday treat for my sister and, as requested, the 2 CV displayed the appropriate number. Generated a considerable amount of interest from passers by as we drove past. Seeing the sights of Paris in this iconic car was an experience not to be forgotten. Not a great deal of padding in the back seat but somehow it added to the experience. Our guide Eric was lovely and very knowledgeable; making us aware of the history of some of the buildings that we would never have known about otherwise. Time was allowed for taking photographs. Would highly recommend this trip.

Very good way to see the major attractions in one day

A really good trip, no problems, got picked up on time. Everything was explained on the bus on the way to Paris in a number of languages making it accessible to everyone. You only get just over 6 hours in Paris which means you have to go around quite fast. Unfortunately we missed the bus back to our hotel, however as explained by the guide on the way there you can catch a metro back to Disneyland from near the leaving point for just over 7 euros.
