Carcassonne: Castle and Ramparts Entry Ticket

Carcassonne: Castle and Ramparts Entry Ticket

Carcassonne was settled as early as the 6th century BC and later became an important Roman town. It was fortified in the 4th century and was a strategic site in the Middle Ages. It took on its definitive shape in the 13th century with the king’s decision to construct the distinctive double-walled ramparts and extend the castle. The city was restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century and is a testimony to 1,000 years of military architecture and 2,500 years of history. Left in ruins after the the Cathar Crusade (1209-1229), the Inquisition and exile of the Trencavel family, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was commissioned by the French state in 1844 to restore the city of Cathar. Completed in 1911 under the direction of his pupil Paul Boeswillwald, the royal city was returned to its original splendor, finally being inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 1997. In a new, self-guided addition to this tour, guests are invited to see the magnificent views from the medieval western ramparts.

This is the first time we (my sister, her husband and their daughter) have come to Grau du Roi (we usually go to Stes Marie de la Mer). This is the first time we have done this activity, and we came from Avignon where we live, just for this. We were delighted to discover that Le Picardie II offers other activities, which we also plan to do soon. The next day, I advertised this activity to my work colleagues and friends. I just regret that the cabin crew is so uninviting (not smiling, not happy, no interaction with the passengers) it's not a prison!! We were celebrating my birthday and that of my brother-in-law: why not offer to take a photo of all 4 of us together? I worked in catering and hospitality for a long time, and it's something I happily offered. That's what service is all about. On the other hand, the tip was requested!

Overall the tour was exactly what we expected. We really wanted to see the Roman sites and that is exactly what we did see. Loved everything! Highly recommend this tour. The only complaint I have was our driver. She was super worried about the amount of time the tour would take and driving to the other cities - kept trying to talk us out of the tour we booked. Felt super rushed at the sites, would have liked to spend a little more time at each place. Super weird. Would recommend the tour company add another hour or two to the length of the tour.

Overall a very nice cruise. Very good quality/price. Bar at reasonable prices for a boat trip. Small downside: the so-called underwater part where we had access to the "glass bottom" was unusable because the windows were full of algae, a shame especially when it is put as a strong point in the description. It is also a shame to have to wait in line when we bought the tickets in advance, what is the point?

It was indicated that we could observe the seabed. In fact the portholes were covered in yellow algae. They barely let the light through so no observation of fish or possibility for the children to see the sea from below. They were very disappointed and so was I. The rest of the walk and the crew on board were very good.

Great outing with our 4 children, we even got to see dolphins! A great holiday memory at a low price for my large family.
