What to Expect
Dylan Thomas’s most famous work, Under Milk Wood was completed and originally performed in New York City, where he also originated spoken word recordings, cutting the first spoken LP in history.

The 2-hour Dylan Thomas Walking Tour, guided by Ianto Roberts, will take you to the places in Greenwich Village where the legendary Welsh poet stayed, ate, drank, worked, and performed, and to where he finally died, while giving you a feel for the Village in the 1950s.

St. Luke in the Fields, located on Hudson Street, was built in 1822. Its first warden, Clement Clarke Moore, wrote ’Twas the Night before Christmas, which is thought to have inspired Thomas’s A Child's Christmas in Wales. The church was the site of the poet’s New York funeral.

Visit the Musical Village, where Dylan Thomas found the company of great writers. See Minetta Lane of the speakeasies and the MacDougal Street of Bob Dylan's first professional gig at Cafe Wha.

He wrote to his parents of the beauty of Washington Square Park, surrounded by the campus of New York University, and with a potter's field under foot. You’ll will find on its western side, across from Thomas's hotel, the city's oldest tree, Hangman's Elm.

See Patchin Place, where Thomas often visited the poet E.E. Cummings. A historic gated cul-de-sac, Patchin Place looks out on Jefferson Market, voted one of the most beautiful buildings in America.

The White Horse Tavern, an 1880's drinking hole for longshoremen, had ships at dock nearby and reminded Thomas of his native Swansea. A writer's haunt since the 1950s and place of pilgrimage for Dylan Thomas devotees, it looks to be furnished as the poet last saw it.

This is the official Dylan Thomas Walking Tour of New York, and is a collaboration of the Welsh Assembly Government in New York and the family of Dylan Thomas.
