I lived in NY from July 1999 to March 2000 and did no visit these sites. It's just amazing how almost 23 years later, and without any prior planning the girls and I ended up on the boat from Liberty State Park NJ to the immigration museum and lady in NY. I will encourage everyone to offer themselves that trip. It is worth it.

Less crowded on the ferry from New Jersey. It departs every one hour from Liberty State Park. There is a security check (bag check), and you need to walk a bit from the parking lot. Be prepared to be there 15 min in advance at least. If you miss the boat, you need to wait for an hour. The ferry circles from Liberty State Park to Ellis Island, then to Liberty Island, where the Status of Liberty is, then back to Liberty State Park in NJ. We left Liberty State Park at 10 o'clock, decided to stay for an hour at each island, and was able to come back to the parking lot around 1:30 pm. We are glad to take this ferry from the NJ side.

I didn’t feel it was the safest activity at this time. There is no social distancing and people seem to have no boundaries as they pushed their way through the line. There were long lines and lots of waiting, but we did get to see the beautiful Statue of Liberty up close.
