Day 1: Arrival at Kayseri or Nevşehir Airport and Transfer to Mustafapaşa
You’ll be met and transferred to Mustafapasa, where you’ll spend the night. The village of Mustafapasa was known as Sinasos during Ottoman times, when it was inhabited by the Greeks, who built many of the churches. See impressive mansions that feature colorful wall paintings.
Day 2: Mustafapaşa – Gomeda Valley – Ortahisar (Walking time: 5 hours 30 minutes)
The trail today takes you through vineyards on the east side of the Gomeda Valley. Head down into the valley and walk along the single track that follows the river. During the trek you’ll see a number of churches, including Korikos and St. Basil’s, and later you’ll come to the Kepez, Sarica, and Pancarlik churches. After about 2 hours of walking in the shade of the valley you’ll turn west, heading up and out of the valley on a dirt road that takes you to Ortahisar, famous for its natural fortress. Overnight at a pension in Ortahisar.
Day 3: Ortahisar Hallac Monastery – Kizilvadi – Güllüdere – Çavuşin (Walking time: 6 hours)
Leave the pension in the morning for a walk of about 20 minutes to an 11th-century Hallac Monastery that was cut into volcanic rock. Continue to Kizil Valley and Güllüdere, where you’ll see the colorful layers created by volcanic ash. Enjoy a lunch break at Kizilvadi, the site of the Kolonlu and Haçli churches. Marvel at the variety of landscapes that open out from the Bozdag rocks. Passing through vineyards you’ll arrive at St. John’s church where Jesus was baptized. Overnight at a pension in Çavuşin.
Day 4: Akvadi – Üçhisar – Güvercinlik – Göreme – Çavuşin (Walking time: 6 hours 30 minutes)
Trek through the Akvadi valley, following an old river bed, and surrounded by fruit orchards and vineyards. The fairy chimneys in this valley are particularly slim and distinct compared to those seen on the previous day. Continue to Üçhisar village to see the fortress, which is a volcanic ash peak, and the panoramic views of the striking Cappadocia area.
After lunch you’ll follow the path to Güvercinlik (Pigeon valley) that takes its name from the numerous pigeon houses built in the 18th century, carved from any available space including abandoned cave dwellings. Later visit the Göreme Open Air museum, where you’ll find the finest of the rock-cut churches, with walls that feature beautiful frescoes. Overnight at the pension in Çavuşin.
Day 5: Ihlara Valley – Derinkuyu – Çavuşin
Explore Ihlara Valley, near Mount Hasan nad Mount Erciyes, 2 of Cappadocia’s volcanoes. The area’s valley served to hide the first churches of Cappadocia, which were carved into fairy chimneys and caves. This became the first settlement for Christians escaping Roman soldiers.
In the Ihlara Valley there are hundreds of antique churches caved in the volcanic rocks. Enjoy a pleasant walk in the valley by vineyards, poplars, and pistachio trees to the soothing sounds of rushing water. Later you’ll visit the underground city of Derinkuyu. Overnight at the pension in Çavuşin.
