Nazca: Overflight of the Nazca Lines

9. Nazca: Overflight of the Nazca Lines

We will pick you up from the bus terminal or hotel in the center of Nazca to take you to the Nazca aerodrome. Upon arrival, we will first go through the necessary procedure, which takes about 45 minutes, and prepare ourselves to soar over these fantastic figures. The Nazca Lines are located in the desert plains between Nazca and Palpa, 447 kilometers from the city of Lima, in one of the driest deserts in the world. The first references to the existence of the lines date back to the year 1547. However, they were discovered by the Peruvian archaeologist Toribio Mejía Xesspe in 1927. The German archaeologist Maria Reiche dedicated her life to the study and preservation of the Nazca Lines from 1946. According to her theory, the lines represent a giant solar and lunar calendar, used by ancient astronomers. There are many theories about the purpose of these drawings. One of them is the possible connection with extraterrestrials, or that the inhabitants created these giant works to be seen by their gods from the sky. To this day, there is no certain information about their purpose. If you chose the 30-minute flight, you will see 13 figures such as the whale, trapezoids, the dog, the astronaut, the monkey, the condor, the compass, the spider, the hummingbird, the parrot, the tree, the hand, and the albatross. If you chose the 1-hour flight (minimum 4 people are required), you will be able to appreciate 21 figures over the beautiful Nazca and Palpa plains. First, you will see the 13 figures mentioned above, and then you will fly over the Palpa plains with new and fantastic lines discovered, like the heron, the crane, the pelican, the seagull, the parrot, the snail, llamas, iguana, lizard, snakes, and various birds. The Nazca culture developed between the 1st and 7th centuries AD, excelling in their polychrome ceramics, textiles, and metalwork. Their ceremonial center is located in Cahuachi, situated in the Nazca River valley. With a network of aqueducts, they managed to fertilize their lands and engage in agriculture. The Nazca Lines are remarkable works of this culture, and theories range from fantastical events to scientific perspectives. After the flight, you will be transferred to your hotel in the city of Nazca or the bus station, according to your itinerary.

To fly over the Nazca lines was a huge tick off my bucket list and loved the little plane. 4/10 passengers found the banking and turbulence too much but I loved it, The Ballestas lake trip was a speed boat ride (24 passengers) and great fun itself . Saw gatherings of Sea lions and a couple of penguins- geology and was fascinating- excellent English translation which Tour Buddies ensured I had. Huacachina much busier and more commercials than I expected- still a lovely walk round and obviously much dune buggy trips for those who wanted . Long day out but enjoy all - my guide - Sergio, and driver Martin, were both excellent

Very organised transport. Was a bit disappointed that the buggy driver did not take us for a stop to take a photo of the oasis. We didn't know he wasn't going to do this until it was too late. If this is important to you, ask the driver at the start. He took us instead to see the sunset, which is not a bad alternative, but we really wanted a nice pic of the oasis from above. Just a message for future passengers, not a complaint. Overall the two days were AMAZING! We saw SO many animals in Paracas/Ballestas Islands! The journey to the Nazca and back was long, but the bus was very comfortable.

I had a great experience! Because I had studied in advance, I was able to find the geoglyphs even though I couldn't understand Spanish or English. I don't usually get motion sickness at all, but I was so absorbed in taking pictures and admiring the scenery that I got sick within about 5 minutes of the trip, and regretted that I should have taken some motion sickness medicine. I think it's a good idea to take motion sickness pills if you have the time.

My tour guide Ricardo made my entire holiday better. He was knowledgeable and made everyone feel included. He even threw he’d out to me after the tour was over to suggest things to do in the cities I was staying in later. The average ago on the tour was probably mid-late 20s. Great energy!

A lot of impressions in a very short time. Well organized by Peru Hop and the guides. The description of the trip could be a bit clearer.
