Overview
Explore one of the most historic monuments of Naples at your own pace with an entrance ticket to the medieval fortress of the Castel Sant'Elmo. Enjoy panoramic views from the roof terrace and visit the Museo del Novecento to see art from the 20th century.
What to Expect
Enter the star-shaped military fortress of the Castel Sant'Elmo at the summit of Vomero Hill, and get fantastic views of Naples and its stunning surroundings. Originally built as a church dedicated to St. Erasmus, the historic fortress looms over St. Martin's Charterhouse (Certosa di San Martino) just below.

Explore the magnificent building at your own pace. Carved into - and out of - the city's famous tufa rock, the current building replaced the original Angevin fortress after it was severely damaged in an earthquake in 1456. Today it stands as a unique example of 16th-century military architecture and is home to a collection of paintings, sculptures and installations that document the major influences of the local art scene.

Discover works from art movements and epochs, such as Futurism and the Nuclear Art of the atomic age. See standout exhibits, including Eugenio Viti's sensual "La Schiena" ("The Back"), Raffaele Lippi's unnerving "Le Quattro Giornate di Napoli" ("The Four Days of Naples") and photographs by Giuseppe Desiato. Look at Salvatore Cotugno's untitled sculpture of a bound, wrapped and muted figure that recalls Giuseppe Sanmartino's "Cristo Velato" ("Veiled Christ) in the Cappella Sansevero. The Museo del Novecento, dedicated to 20th-century Neapolitan art, is especially worth the trip

Take time to explore the building and its grounds. Designed by the Viceroy Don Pedro Alvarez de Toledo and Pedro Luis Escriva, a military engineer from Valencia, the “roof-top terrace” encircling the entire perimeter of the castle is its chief asset. Go to the terrace for panoramic views of the city and Bay of Naples, and linger for as long as you wish.
