What You'll Do
  • Learn about the political and social history of Naples through its landmarks
  • Marvel over the physical beauty of the city with guided commentary
  • Participate in discussions with a small group of no more than 6 people
Overview
Join us on an intimate group tour led by either an art or social historian, and, while visiting many churches and monuments, we will attempt to paint a realistic picture of life in Naples today...in all of its chaos and beauty.
What to Expect
Absorb both the beauty and the culture of one of the world's most complex cities. Your walk begins with an exploration of Castel Nuovo, the ancient political center of the city, up through the high medieval period when Petrarch and Boccaccio were guests here. You will also observe the other important Neapolitan castle, Castle dell'Ovo  -literally, the “egg castle”-, which also has a history stretching back to Roman times and has had many reincarnations, most notably as a prison under the Normans.

With a view of the bay of Naples as a backdrop, you will make your way to the Palazzo Reale, designed by Domenico Fontana, which served as the royal palace during the reign of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century. Boasting an incredible imperial style of interior decoration, the royal apartments offer proof of the wealth and power of the city during Bourbon rule.

Your itinerary can vary at this point: you may continue along the waterfront to take in some of the great Neapolitan scenery, or move into the dense Spanish district to see its artistic treasures, such as the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli or the Palazzo Serra di Cassano.
