Prepare to be surprised on this insightful tour to Mumbai's vibrant, bustling, and industrial Dharavi Slum. See how its inhabitants live, and learn about the pottery, leather, and recycling businesses located in this impoverished and crowded central area.
What to Expect
In the heart of Mumbai, Dharavi slum is one of the largest slums in Asia with over 1 million inhabitants. But you may be surprised: the slum, while overcrowded and impoverished, is also home to thousands of thriving small businesses.
Your driver and guide will meet you at your hotel and take you to Dharavi. Walking through the narrow alleyways of the slum, you'll see Dharavi's thriving small-scale industries busy at work producing embroidered garments, export-quality leather goods, pottery, and plastic. Learn about Dharavi's thriving recycling business, which process 80% of Mumbai's recyclable goods, creating new products or minimizing waste.
There are no idle hawkers or beggars in busy Dharavi. You will see a pirated movie shack, hear the sounds of uniformed school children in the dozen or so schools, and see the barber’s shop and the doctor’s clinic.
You'll also face the realities of how the citizens of Dharavi live; often families of 5-6 people live in a 1-room tenement. There is just one lavatory for every 1,500 residents, and no hospital. Running water and electricity are luxuries. Open drains run thick with untreated human and industrial waste, water taps run dry constantly.
A tour through Dharavi is quite an adventure, and promises an eye-opening experience and insight into the slum, Mumbai, and modern India.
