Discover Mumbai's Jewish heritage on a 2-day tour of the important synagogues in the city and its surrounds. See the buildings linked to the Jewish community, learn about the city's longstanding Jewish history, and visit the Jewish cemetery in Alibaug.
What to Expect
The Jewish community in India was comprised of 3 distinct groups: Bene Israel, the Malabar Jewish community, and the Iraqi Jews. Their history dates back to more than 2,000 years ago where there is evidence listed on the cemeteries in Hebrew. Experience Jewish culture, gain a better understanding of the past, and trace these Jewish roots everywhere from Europe to India on a 2-day Jewish heritage tour of Mumbai.
Day 1: Mumbai (Meals: L, D)
On your first day, visit the Knesset Eliyahoo Synagogue (also known as Fort Jewish Synagogue), established in 1884 and wonderfully adorned with colorful pillars, chandeliers, and stained-glass windows. Proceed to the Magen David Synagogue, a Victorian building with Gothic-like frontal pillars and a clock tower. Next, continue to Tiphereth Israel Synagogue, one of the oldest synagogues in Mumbai. Later, visit the Gate of Mercy Synagogue, established in 1796 by Late Commandant Samaji Hasaji Divekar (Samuel Ezekiel Divekar). After dinner at a city restaurant, return to your hotel for the night.
Day 2: Alibaug (Meals: B, L)
After breakfast, depart from the Gateway of India by a catamaran for Mandwa, and drive to the Magen Aboth Synagogue in Alibaug. The place was famous as the first town in Konkan where the Bene Israel, the largest Jewish community of Indian Jews, erected a synagogue. Alibaug is home to many forts, churches, synagogues, and the tower of St. Barbara. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant and visit the nearby Jewish cemetery, before returning to Mumbai for your tour's end.
