The gallery was founded by Moscow merchant Pavel Tretyakov who began collecting works by Russian artists in 1856. In August 1892, Tretyakov presented the collection and gallery to the City of Moscow.
Now reopened, after a 9-year renovation, the gallery is home to the world’s best collection of Russian icons, as well as a fantastic collection of pre-revolutionary masterpieces of Russian art.
