Montserrat is one of Spain's most beloved spiritual sites. The awe-inspiring scenery has made it a prime spot for pilgrimages through much of Christian history, but you needn't be Catholic to enjoy your visit. Here are a few facts any good tour should cover!
In the Middle Ages, the old monastery at Montserrat was widely believed to have once been home to the Holy Grail sought by King Arthur!
The original monastery lies in ruins, but the current one – the 18th-century Santa Maria de Montserrat – is perhaps Spain's foremost spiritual building.
Its chapel only dates back to around 1700, but the famous Virgin of Montserrat was supposedly hidden in this steep hillside during the Moorish invasions of the 8th century!
As well as its ancient virgin relic, the mountain was where the founder of the Jesuit Order, St. Ignatius, was absolved. It also boasts one of the oldest boys' choirs in the world!
Religious or not, making the overnight pilgrimage to see the sunrise silhouette the mountains has become a veritable rite of passage for Catalonia's youth!
Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey is open daily from 10:00AM to 5:45PM.
The best (and easiest!) way to reach the abbey from Barcelona is by train. It should take 1½ hours to reach the station Monistrol de Montserrat, or you can get off a stop early (Aeri de Montserrat) to finish your journey by cable car. The spectacular views are worth the extra cost!

What People Are Saying About Montserrat Mountain
Martha, our guide was fantastic. She made the tour very interesting and had an astounding knowledge of all the places we visited plus she provided us with lots of little extras to make the tour a fantastic event.
The booking and scheduling was easy. Finding the location easy, the coach comfortable and the driving smooth. The guide's information was basic, and the onland tour was rushed and not having a touring guide around the facility, a lot of precious time was wasted.
Peaceful place to go and pray, take a fresh air breath, claim and recover. Recharge yourself with full energy and balance all your body/mind/spirit.
Alexia our tour guide was great. Very informative. Getting the early access for a 7.45 am tour meant we missed the crowds. Beautiful tour fully recommend it to anyone.
Unfortunately, it has become a top tourist attraction with all the hullabaloo and shops that entails. However, if you are able to ignore all that, it is a magnificent and enigmatic place with a breathtaking natural environment and many wonderful pathways to wander. The Virgin of Montserrat (Black Madonna) is special too, almost spellbinding with her curious countenance as well as her legendary story.
