What to Expect
Luminous Lagoon, also known as Glistening Waters, is located in Falmouth Rock, where the Martha Brae empties into the Caribbean Sea. It is a popular spot after dark, and is Jamaica’s top natural nighttime attraction.
The glow in the water is caused by microorganisms that emit a flash of light when disturbed. What appears to be a large flash of light is actually the combined result of thousands of small flashes, each generated by a single organism.
Jamaica's Luminous Lagoon is one of the 3 places in the world where these microorganisms live and create this natural bioluminescent phenomenon. It is said that of the 3 spots, Jamaica's is the brightest.
The lagoon stretches along the marshlands from the small community of Rock to the town of Falmouth, in Trelawny. When it is dark and the water is disturbed it lights up unimaginably. At night when it rains, the entire body of water is illuminated by each falling raindrop.
