What You'll Do
  • Go underground to discover the true historic center of the city
  • Discover the most ancient church in Milan
  • Explore an extraordinary artistic and archaeological monument
The Crypt of Leonardo, now re-opened after 50 years, is the most ancient Church of Milan and is located under the Ambrosian Gallery. Leonardo declared this crypt to be like the original city center of Milan.
What to Expect
After fifty years, the crypt of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre has reopened to the public. This is an extraordinary artistic and archaeological monument in the heart of Milan, the true focus of the Roman civitas that St Charles Borromeo called ‘the navel of the city’, and that Leonardo da Vinci, in a map of the Codex Atlanticus, indicated to be the true center of Milan.

The crypt also allows visitors to discover one of the oldest testimonies of the city’s history. The flooring is in fact made up of large slabs of white Verona stone, and comes from the pavement of the ancient Roman forum of the fourth century, the main square of the Roman civitas and center of major civil and religious activities.
