Imagine an ancient city, magnificently preserved, where every step reveals a piece of history. That's what you'll discover when you visit ancient Messinia, cradle of a fierce resistance founded in the 4th century BC by Epaminondas of Thebes. The city of Messene embodies the struggle for freedom after centuries of Spartan domination, and thanks to the intervention of the Thebans, they were finally able to rebuild their city. Messene quickly became a symbol of resistance for its independence. Its meticulous urban planning, with its agora, theater, and fortifications, testifies to the determination to build a prosperous and enduring city. Despite the efforts of its inhabitants, Messene lost its independence over time with the Roman and then Byzantine domination, and was finally abandoned during the Middle Ages. Rediscovered by archaeologists in the 19th century, Messene today reveals the remains of a rich and complex civilization that blends the history, culture and lifestyle of ancient Greece. Marvel at the layout of the buildings and the water distribution network, evidence of an urban structure that was remarkable for the period. You will visit the Agora, the central square where the citizens used to gather for commercial exchanges and political debates. The Asclepion, the administrative center of the city, was also dedicated to the worship of numerous gods. Private houses, the Sarapis sanctuary of Egyptian gods, where archaeological excavations have unearthed numerous remains, offer a glimpse of daily life in the ancient city of Messene.

This experience was a highlight of our visit to Greece. We visited in November, during harvest season, so we were able to watch the harvesting crew and join in a little. We learned a lot about olives and olive oil production while we walked around the Castle of Androusia ruins, which is the meeting point for the tour even if the app tells you differently. Then we had a tour of the mill and how they make table olives and olive oil from the different olive varieties. Last, we sat in an old mill for the olive oil tasting and pairing. The host and the crew were professional and knowledgeable about the process, including how olive oils are graded. The pairing foods were homemade and delicious, and perfect with the olive oils. This experience was top notch and I haven't been able to stop telling people about it. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an immersive and fun experience.

Fotini's tour was by far the best experience I had in Kalamata. She is so energetic and passionate about the topics she discusses. I had the pleasure of doing both her Historical and Paranormal tour, and both showed me a fascinating side of the city that gave me an incredibly deep understanding of its history and culture, the impact of which can be seen to this day. I left feeling very enriched by the experience, and also by Fotini's personality, as she is one of the kindest and most interesting people I have met during my trip around Greece. Highly recommend!!

The food tour was overall an amazing experience and informative of the foods in Kalamata. We met Sofia at the church, visited many local shops for tastings, learned about the Greek culture and by the end, we could barely move because we were so full. This was a great way to end our stay in kalamata but I wish we could have done it at the beginning so we could enjoy all the things we learned during our stay. Thank you again Sofia for the great experience.

This tour exceeded my expectations, it s very organised, lots of food to try from lots of different shop with lovely people and Sofia is a fantastic guide! Highly recommend this tour 😀

Nice tour, very engaging guide with a lots of story about beautiful Kalamata, would highly recommend for a fun time!
