See the penguins, koalas, and other wildlife of Phillip Island on a full-day tour from Melbourne. Stop for morning coffee and afternoon tea en route, and admire the stunning scenery along the spectacular coastal roads of Victoria.
What to Expect
Travel southeast from Melbourne via the farming districts of Victoria for the start of this full-day wildlife tour to Phillip Island.
You will bypass the southeastern suburbs before driving through beef and dairy cattle farms, horse breeding studs, and swampland. Stop for afternoon tea en route, before skirting to Westernport to enjoy views of French Island.
Cross over the bridge to Phillip Island. Recognised as a world leader for environmental conservation, Phillip Island’s sandy and rocky shoreline teems with wildlife, including over 200 species of birds. Time permitting, watch the fishermen cleaning their catch of the day, battling among the gulls and pelicans!
Visit the Koala Conservation Centre, one of the few areas in Victoria with a protected koala colony. Walk among the treetops in the bush, and see wild koalas within touching distance. You may even spot a wallaby or two.
Time permitting, pass Swan Lake, the island's largest freshwater lake, and head to the Nobbies headland for views that stretch over Mornington Peninsula and Bass Strait. Offshore lies Seal Rocks, home to Australia's largest Australian fur seal colony.
After a dinner in Cowes, it’s time to watch the Penguin Parade. Each evening at dusk Little Penguins arrive back on the beach after a day of fishing. Laugh as they waddle their way into the dunes where their burrows are situated. You will have access to the less populated boardwalks, enabling you to gain close contact with the penguins without the hustle and bustle.
