Malta: Mdina and Rabat Walking Tour with Catacombs

Malta: Mdina and Rabat Walking Tour with Catacombs

Mdina, once the capital city of Malta, has had many names throughout its history, but its medieval name describes it best: "Città Notabile" - the noble city. Built on a plateau in the center of the island, its baroque cathedral and magnificent bastions dominate the skyline. A stroll through its narrow streets, which have not changed much in the last 1,000 years, is a must for any visitor to Malta. The area occupied by Mdina has been inhabited since at least the Bronze Age. The Phoenicians and Romans established their own settlements here, but the modern name and layout of the city reflect Arab rule before the Normans firmly established it as the country's capital. Although the construction of Valletta lessened its importance, a strong earthquake in 1693 led to reconstruction and a revival of the city. Since that time, Mdina has changed very little. Walk past the most notable sites in Mdina, including Vilhena Palace, St. Agatha’s Chapel, the Banca Giuratale, the Mdina Cathedral, and much more. During this tour we will visit Rabat. While in Rabat we enter Wignacourt museum and visit: WW2 Shelters, Catacombs and St. Paul's Grotto. Entrance ticket included.

The tour of Rabat and Mdina was great. Our guide Matthew was very knowledgeable and able to convey his knowledge to the whole group. We have been on a Mdina tour before so found the Rabat part (which is the longest) most interesting. My only criticism would be that the group was large at about 25 people but Matthew coped with this really well so it worked out fine in the end.

We had a mixed group with particularly young people in 30’s and some older. It was a great atmosphere. The tour guide told the information in an interactive and funny way. This tour was one of the best things in my trip to Malta. Recommend this to everyone. Ps; we had the tour around 3pm and a lot of time we used the shadow so the warm weather didn’t bother at all :-)

We had an incredible tour of Mdina and Rabat with Chris. His deep knowledge of Maltese history and engaging storytelling made the cities come alive. The tour was well-paced and Chris helped us to explore and appreciate these beautiful cities. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Malta!

I was very impressed at how knowledgeable our tour guide, Matthew(?) was. I would certainly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Malta. Excellent!

Excellent. Carmel was incredibly patient, knowledgeable and a pleasure to meet.
