What to Expect
Explore some of southern Italy’s most beautiful and historic landmarks on this half-day tour from Matera.
Start with a visit to the historic site of Montescaglioso, home to the region’s most important Benedictine monastery. From here we will head to Miglionico, a small medieval town home to Castello del Malconsiglio, and the setting of the “Barons’ Conspiracy” to assassinate the King of Naples.
When the King, Ferdinand I of Aragon, heard about the plan in 1485 the barons were executed in the Sala del Malconsiglio, or the Hall of Ill-Advice.
Take a moment to see the impressive paneled polyptych by Cima da Conegliano in the parish church. Then, stop at the Crypt of Original Sin, also known as the Sistine Chapel of Rock Churches. This amazing 9th century landmark is not to be missed!
After taking in these remarkable historic sites, we will return to Matera where the tour will end.
