Explore the ancient Roman city of Arles listed by UNESCO, where Van Gogh used to live. Discover the medieval hilltop village of Les Baux de Provence to explore the 10th century fortress and the unique show of Carrieres de Lumiere.
What to Expect
Discover the ancient Roman city of Arles listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO. This guided walking tour will take you to the main Roman monument, the arena, the amphitheater, Saint Trophime church, Van Gogh’s hospital, the summer garden and café.
Spend your free time visiting the medieval village of Baux de Provence. Explore the village and castle, a fortress built in the 10th century. An imposing 12th century castle dominates the pleasant little perched village. Les Baux is well-restored and well-tended, and the amazing big castle (rebuilt in the 16th century and restored in 1960) gives the village an ever-present medieval mood. Lovely and unspoiled by tourist attractions, the narrow streets wind between charming old buildings with plentiful small squares and fountains hidden away for you to discover.
As an extra option, enjoy a unique show in Europe in the Carrieres de Lumiere, an ancient limestone quarry where the natural walls act like giant screens, before returning to Marseille pier.
