Travel from Marrakesh to Imlil in the Atlas Mountains by car. See the Argan Oil Cooperative and the weekly market in Asni (Saturdays), before arriving in Imlil, where you’ll trek through the foothills and valleys and enjoy lunch with a Berber family.
What to Expect
Depart by car from Marrakesh around 9:00 for a 2-hour drive south through the Moulay Brahim Gorges, visiting the Argan Oil Co-operative in Tahnaout and Asni's weekly market (every Saturday) on the way.
You will then reach Imlil (1740m), set in the upper foothills of the western High Atlas mountains, a main trailhead with streams and paths branching out in all directions. Here you will leave your vehicle to take a welcome glass of mint tea in the village and meet your local guide prior to setting out on a trek (length of your choice) towards the south, to the Berber village of Aroumd (1843m). On the way you will pass by fields of crops, waterfalls, cherry orchards and walnut trees. You can stop for a refreshing glass of freshly-squeezed orange juice whilst you cool your feet in the waters of the waterfall.
Throughout your trek you will be rewarded with amazing views of the High Atlas Mountains and the jagged western High Atlas peaks of the Toubkal Massif will be before you - Jbels Aguelzim (3547m), Aksouâl (3847m) and the Adrar Adj (3122m).
You will stop at Aroumd to visit this singular village in the Assif Aït Mizane valley, overlooking ancient irrigated terraced fields of barley, corn and vegetables and surrounded by almond and walnut trees. Another half an hour back will take you to the village of Ait Souka, where you will be rewarded with a 3-course lunch served on the roof terrace of a traditional Berber guesthouse.
After lunch you can wander back down the road into the center of Imlil, where your guide will show you around the shops, or if you have the energy you can complete another short trek into the village of Ait Souka, where you can have mint tea with a member of the guide's family.
On the way back to Marrakesh you will stop at the Moulay Brahim gorge to experience a short camel ride through areas where Mission Impossible 5 was filmed. You will arrive back in Marrakesh at around 18:00.
