What You'll Do
  • Visit Tinmel Mosque, one of only two mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims are allowed to enter
  • Learn about the Berber heritage and way of life
  • Spend time in Ijoukak, a traditional Berber village in the Atlas Mountains
On this private day tour, visit Tinmel Mosque and the Berber village of Ijoukak in the Atlas Mountains to learn about the Berber heritage. Try a camel ride at a stop on the way back to Marrakech.
What to Expect
Your guide and driver will collect you from your accommodation in Marrakech at 08:30, and you will head out towards the Atlas Mountains. On the way you can stop at an argan oil co-operative where the ladies will show you how they grind argan nuts to produce the products Morocco is famous for.

If you choose to do this day excursion on a Saturday you an also make a stop at the local souks in Asni, where you will experience the weekly shop for the Berbers of the surrounding villages. You will see stalls of fruit and vegetables, spices, tagines, household items and it is even possible to purchase a donkey!

Your journey will continue up into the High Atlas towards Ouirgane and then into the village of Ijoukak, a Berber village that remains uninfluenced by tourism. You will leave your vehicle here and walk for approximately two hours enjoying the scenery, listening to your guide talk about the Berber way of life and heritage.

Your guide will then take you to visit Tinmel Mosque, the fortress (and one-time state treasury) with its high walls and strong towers, the sole survivor of the 12th-century city built by the founder of the Almohad (Unitarian) dynasty, Mehdi Ibn Toumarte. This is the only mosque in Morocco – other than the mosque of Hassan II in Casablanca – which a non-Muslim may enter (except on Fridays).

In the actual village there is a small kasbah in ruins and an old water tank which produces a regular supply of the French gastronomic delight – edible frogs. And you might choose to buy a litre of Tinmel olive oil from the olive press and mill down towards the river.

You will then head back to Ijoukak for your lunch before exploring the area further, either by car or on foot. Your journey back to Marrakech will see a stop for a camel ride, with you reaching Marrakech at approximately 18:00.
