Full description

Spending a night in the Sahara Desert is an unforgettable experience for visitors to Morocco and this three-day tour lets you travel further and explore more along the way. Visit UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou, the Valley of the Roses, and Tinghir; stop at traditional Berber villages around the Todra Gorge; then take a camel trek through the Erg Chebbi dunes the highest in Morocco and sleep beneath the desert stars at Berber campsite.

Day 1: Marrakech - Tinghir

Your shared 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga will start early in the morning. Head to Ait Benhaddou through Tizi Ntichka pass and the high Atlas Mountains. Many stops will be made along the way. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, which was also served as a set for various Hollywood blockbusters. Continue to Ouazazate and Kasbah Taourirte before lunch. In the afternoon, drive to Tinghir via the valley of the roses before you reach your hotel located in Tinghir. Dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Tinghir – Merzouga

After breakfast at your hotel in Tinghir, your journey will start today with a drive along the road of 1001 Kasbah to Ouasis of Tinghir, where you will deviate to a minor road driving along the river to Todra canyons. After some time at leisure to enjoy the immensity of the huge cliffs, and lunch at a local café (at your leisure), continue early in the afternoon to Rissani, famous for its date market, and being a starting point of the ancient trading caravans crossing the Sahara desert to Tomboctou.

Continue to Merzouga driving through some rocky desert landscape. Upon arrival at the edge of Erg Chebbi dunes, meet your camel caravan, and ride your camels through the amazing color-changing sand dunes with the sunset on the horizon as a backdrop. Reach your Sahara Desert camp, nestled in the middle of nowhere just before darkness.

After some time to admire the sand dunes and the surrounding landscapes, get ready for a Moroccan dinner served under the stars next to a campfire. Late at night, enjoy Berber music with the local hosts playing drums.

Day 3: Merzouga – Marrakech

After an early breakfast and a camel ride back to the main road, meet your driver and drive back to Ouarzazate. After some time at leisure for lunch, carry on in the afternoon to Marrakech through the high atlas mountains. Your shared 3-day desert tour will end in Marrakech in the evening.

My partner and I took this trip in June 2022, and we had a fantastic experience. The accommodation in both locations are a lot better than we had expected for the price, and the van was very clean and comfortable. The included experiences were really interesting, and the Sahara camp was exactly what we’d hoped - in the dunes, spacious tents, great food, great music, and the option to sleep under the stars if we chose. We thought the lunch restaurants were overpriced, but we brought our own snacks and weren’t obliged to buy anything. We happily tipped various guides and the driver, as that’s just the culture in Morocco, so would be expected no matter which tour you choose, but this didn’t cost much at all. Overall, we would definitely recommend this trip.

Driver Mustapha Ouarzazate was wonderful and very accommodating to everyone’s needs. Would go with him again. For the whole trip, places we stayed in were clean, the food we ate was great and fresh, and the drinks we bought were cold. Berber tour guides Abdel and Aziz were great too (comedians). Sahara desert experience was one of a kind, even though we didn’t go too far into the desert, it was amazing. Dinner and drumming afterwards around the fire was great too. Tents slept 3-4 people, had two toilets and one sink (all clean and with running water). No shower but large bins of water was available for washing. Tents were hot so mattresses were offered for campers to sleep outside. Bring ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper. You’re sharing the sleeping quarters with others who also choose to sleep under the stars so it could be noisy. Wake up on the third day is 5:30 so be prepared. But watching the sunrise in the desert is worth it. Camels were great too. Don’t think just book

Great value for money. We enjoyed visiting the kasbah's in two Berber villages, learning about the agricultural practices in an oasis, having access to a swimming pool both nights we were away, and last but not least, appreciating the majestic sahara via camel (twice). Yes, it's alot of driving in 3 days, but totally worth it.
