Overview
Take a journey through Spanish history as you marvel at the grandeur of the Royal Monastery of El Escorial and discover the medieval roots of Madrid. You'll see examples of the city’s Spanish Renaissance architecture and gems of modern Madrid as well.
What to Expect
On this full-day combined tour from Madrid, you’ll start out with a visit to the spectacular El Escorial Monastery. A symbol of Spanish power in the 16th century, this monument commemorates victory in the Battle of St. Quentin. It is also the site of the mausoleum of Charles V.

Built in the Renaissance Humanism style, El Escorial was considered the 8th wonder of the world for some time. See the Hapsburgs Palace, the Kings and Princes Mausoleum, the Chapter Houses, the Architecture Room, the Weapons Room, the Library, and the Basilica.

Then you’ll visit the Basilica of the Valley of the Fallen, conditions permitting. This enormous monument, built between 1940 and 1959 is carved into the mountain, 1,350 meters up. An impressive 150-meter-high cross stands over the magnificent nature reserve of Madrid’s mountain range.

After your guide’s commentary, you’ll have free time to admire the wonderful views of the Sierra de Madrid.

Back in Madrid you’ll see the many contrasts that represent various periods in the city’s history. See Madrid’s medieval origins, including the Arabic fortress and the Barrio de la Moreria.

Explore the Hapsburg Madrid of Felipe II, with its Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Walk to Calle Mayor, Plaza Mayor, and Plaza de la Villa. Next you’ll see the sites of Bourbon Madrid and the urban layout from the time of Carlos III. Take in the Royal Palace, the Cibeles Fountain, the Neptune Fountain, and the Puerta de Alcalá.

Take in examples of 19th-century architecture, including the Prado Museum. Visit areas of contemporary Madrid, such as the Gran Vía, Paseo de la Castellana, Barrio Salamanca, Plaza de Castilla and Parque del Oeste. You’ll visit the commercial and financial areas of modern Madrid as well, and see the emblematic Ventas Bullring and Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Your sightseeing tour takes you from Puente del Rey to Puente de Segovia, where you’ll find the Royal Palace. Stop at the famous Hard Rock Café to enjoy a complimentary drink.
