Full description

Established in the 11th century by William the Conqueror, Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. It has been remodeled by a succession of kings and queens, including Henry II, Charles II, and George IV. Today the Queen spends most of her private weekends at Windsor Castle, which is also used regularly for ceremonial occasions. Your ticket provides admission to the Castle, including the magnificent State Apartments, which are furnished with some of the finest treasures from the royal collection.

Among the masterpieces are paintings by Holbein, Rubens, and Van Dyck, as well as fine English and French furniture. During the winter months, the sumptuous private apartments created by George IV, known as the Semi-State Rooms, are added to the visitor route. Your admission also includes access to St. George's Chapel. This is one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings in England, and is the final resting place for 10 monarchs, including Henry VIII and Charles I. There is a lot to see and do at Windsor Castle, so please allow enough time to make the most of your visit, which is likely to last between 2.5 and 3 hours. The Castle is situated at the top of a steep hill, and the visitor route covers long distances, so comfortable shoes are advised.

this was worth the extra ticket price to get there early before the enormous crowds. although limited in what the public was allowed to see of the castle, what was allowed was enjoyable. the one disappointing aspect was the actual view from the tour's picture. you actually arrive and enter through the side (almost back end of the castle) so the grand entrance as shown in the picture is not visible.

The booking worked very well, we were directed by the readily identifiable Castle staff to the location for exchanging our voucher for tickets. The weather was sunny and 20-deg, the included self guide audio sets were very useful and overall, it was a totally enjoyable experience. The Queen was home at the time, resting after her Jubilee Celebrations, but did not see her or any notable people during the visit.

Pre-book if you can, the process online and at arrival is very efficient with a separate queue for those who have pre-booked (to the right of the main entrance). The tour of Windsor castle was great! Staff ushered us outside to see the Red Arrows Flyover for the Jubilee. We used the audio guide to navigate the castle (foc) and it was more than sufficient.
