  • Explore Canterbury Cathedral and see where Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered
  • See Dover Castle and take in the views from the white cliffs of Dover
  • Take a tour of Leeds Castle, home to many of England’s queens
Overview
On this full-day tour from London you’ll visit Canterbury, home to English Christianity, and travel through vineyards and hop fields en route to the famed White Cliffs of Dover. See Leeds Castle, considered by many to be the loveliest castle in the world.
What to Expect
You’ll depart from London in the morning, passing Westminster Abbey and Parliament, heading over the Thames towards historic Blackheath. Your guide will take you through centuries of history as you continue into the countryside and the county of Kent.

On this 11-hour tour, you’ll pass orchards and unique oast houses used for drying hops. Crossing the Medway River, you’ll see Dicken's beloved Rochester and head onward to Canterbury.

Dominating the skyline is Bell Harry, the tall tower of Canterbury Christ Church Cathedral. On a guided tour you’ll see the burial place of King Henry IV and his Queen, Joan of Navarre. Learn of the brutal murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170, and see the very spot in the north transept where it occurred.

Canterbury's history goes much further back than this, of course. It was a Roman settlement known as Durovernum Canticorum, and later, in 597 A.D. the place where King Aethelbert was baptized by Saint Gregory and the Christian church was brought to these islands for a second and more permanent time.

With its ancient walls encircling timber-framed houses, Canterbury is a perfect place to spend the morning.

After a break for lunch you’ll continue on to the dramatic coast. Head up steep narrow roads, passing Dover Castle and a multitude of former defenses dating back to Napoleonic times and World War II. At Langdon Bay you’ll sit atop the famous white cliffs and gaze across the English Channel to France.

Continue along Kent's lovely narrow leafy lanes, and stop for a break in the picturesque village of Chilham. Admire its historic square, manor house, and 1,400-year-old yew tree. Your drive will take you over the Weald of Kent, the famous ridge that is the backbone of area, and the onward to Leeds Castle.

The castle dates to 880 A.D. and was home to many of England’s queens. Enjoy a tour of the castle and the gardens and take some time to explore the maze and the famous dog collar museum before returning to London.
