5 Loch Ness Monster Myths and Legends

Scotland's Loch Ness Monster has been the center of myth and tall tales for 1500 years. Though the Highlands are spectacular to see, its famous loch continues to lure visitors in hopes of a chance encounter with this elusive creature of the deep.

What lurks beneath the surface

What lurks beneath the surface

Some say that Scottish lore about mythological creatures living in its waters, such as kelpies, selkies and "water horses," fuels the fire of a monster prowling Loch Ness.

The saint that saved the day

The saint that saved the day

The first encounter was in 565 AD, when St. Columba drove a water beast away with the power of his voice and prevented it from devouring one of his companions in the water.

Road work along the shore in 1933 seemed to rouse Nessie from the deep, and a year later a black-and-white photo revealed a slender neck and small head emerging above the surface.

Jurassic proportions

Nessie's features ironically resemble a plesiosaurus, a sea reptile that looks like a lizard with flippers and lived in the early Jurassic period 200 million years ago.

Extensive use of technology has yet to find the mythical monster. Though if ever caught, ancient legend predicts a catastrophic end of the region--it's food for thought!

Our insider tips

Getting to Loch Ness

If you're renting a car, take the A82 highway to reach the visitors' center in Drumnadrochit, which is on the northwest shore of Loch Ness. If you're relying on bus service, there are daily departures from Inverness (30 minutes) and Fort Williams (1 1/2 hours).

Loch Ness activities

The Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition in Drumnadrochit exhibits the history of the region and the hunt for Nessie. The biggest attraction is, of course, a one-hour cruise on Loch Ness, complete with sonar equipment and underwater cameras just in case. Apart from the monster-mania, Urquhart Castle is nearby and worth a visit. Though blown to bits in 1692 and left in ruins, it provides amazing views of Loch Ness from its elevated location.

When to go

Scotland's weather is variable. You could wake up to grey and rain, but then bask in sunshine by lunchtime. May and June are recommendable months to visit, as the weather is generally fine, and the days are long. Consider September, as well, when the crowds are less and fall is in the air.

Good to know

Hours will depend largely on your means of transportation. Tours of the loch will have limited times.
  • Is it expensive?

It's not necessary, but for a short visit, a guide can point out the best locations to see.
  • How to get there
Loch Ness is reachable by car or bus, with many tours passing through from major cities.
  • Additional information
Be prepared for rain while visiting and pack accordingly! Pay attention to transportation times when planning your visit!

Well, if you haven't tried it, I urge you to.. This was the best decision me and the Mrs made. This is the only company thst picks you up from your hotel and drops you near the place that you were picked up from. The driver Jamie was a blessing! Really friendly and funny guy, very knowledgeable and made a lot of stops so we could stretch our legs and take pictures. Jamie also advised us where to eat when we reached Lochness, and we really enjoyed it. The tour is well planned and it's probably the cheapest you can find. Totally worth it . The music selection was perfect too. The only thing I would say is that maybe Jamie should give himself a little break from talking because he is already working so hard. I totally don't mind him talking all the time since he's so friendly and funny too but some people can be problematic and maybe they don't want to hear anything at certain times. But all in all, thankyou grayline and most importantly Jamie. My respect!

We had an unreal experience on the highland tour. You get to see so much and visit loads of different towns around the highlands with breathtaking views. Our tour guide was Jamie and he really fulfilled our trip with his professional attitude and he went the extra mile to ensure that all passengers had a wonderful trip even dropping us all back to our hotels after. He has a great knowledge about the highlands with some funny stories too and his passion for his job was very apparent. Would highly recommend this trip to anyone coming to Scotland. The trip is very well organised and loved the river cruise seeing more views along Loch Ness.

Pick up in the morning was on time. Our driver/guide, Jamie was very knowledgeable and pointed out places of interest with lots of stops for us to take photos. As a history lover i found him very infornative about the history of Scotland and he was passionate about the subject. The coach itself was comfortable. The boat trip on Loch Ness itself was very good. The only thing that could have been better was the weather but the sun did come out at times. Overall i enjoyed the day and the trip was good value for money.

Highly enjoyed our Loch Ness tour with Dougie as our guide!! Our guide was exceptional, his enthusiasm, passion, extensive knowledge and Scottish humor made our experience most enjoyable. The coffee and lunch breaks were well planned, the Loch Ness cruise was well organized and we saw some breathtaking views of the Scottish highlands. I would highly recommend this tour and I will definetly be coming back to see the heather in full bloom. :D

Amazing experience, highly recommended . The guide was really friendly, taking care about all of us, making sure we were comfy, having fun. He plays amazing music during the trip what helps you getting the environment of the stories he tells. Landscapes are amazing, rainbows and stops to get nice pics.
