What to Expect
Few places in the world evoke a sense of magic and mystery as deeply as the charming Portuguese village of Sintra. From magical forests to romantic palaces, Sintra never fails to seduce. Discover all of Sintra's allure on this full-day tour from Lisbon.
En route to Sintra from Lisbon, we pay a visit to 18th-century Queluz National Palace, one of the last great Rococo buildings to be designed in Europe. Queluz's architecture is representative of the final extravagant period of Portuguese culture that followed the discovery of Brazilian gold in 1690.
Heading on into Sintra, our first stop is at Sintra National Palace, the best-preserved medieval Royal Palace in Portugal. Inside, there is a rich range of 14th-18th century mudejar style ceramic tiles brought from around the Islamic world. Renaissance elements can be seen at the Swan’s Room and at the richly decorated Coat-of-Arms room. Surprisingly the most eye-catching part of the National Palace are its colossal chimneys. Built in the 14th century, these chimneys can be seen from miles away.
One of the true gems of Sintra is the Quinta de Regaleira. Located just beyond the village square, it consists of a romantic palace and chapel, as well as a luxurious park featuring stunning lakes, grottoes, wells, fountains and a vast array of exquisite constructions.
Climbing into the mountains, we reach the Moorish Castle. Early documentary evidence shows that this was an Islamic stronghold, with some authors dating its foundation back to the age of the Visigoths. Continue the journey and find yourself at remarkable Pena Palace. This colorful building appears straight from a fairy tale, an ultimate expression of Portuguese Romantic architecture.
Relax after this exciting day's journey and sample Sintra's famed travesseiro pastry - perhaps the most beloved of all Sintra's attractions..
