- Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sintra
- Cruise along the fabulous Estoril coast after a visit to Cascais
- Enjoy the most amazing combination of architectural styles, colors, and shapes that you can find in Portugal at the Palácio da Pena
The Sintra tour begins in the center of the Village, which has enchanted kings and inspired poets, such as Lord Byron. While taking a brief tour through the historic centre, you’ll find yourself surrounded by old houses that have been converted into small shops and bakeries, selling local products and handicrafts.
Tour continues towards one of the highlights of Sintra, the ‘Palácio da Pena’, an astonishing fairytale castle located on one of the highest peaks of the Sintra mountain range. Here you’ll experience a majestic and romantic atmosphere and enjoy the most amazing combination of architectural styles, colours and shapes that you can find in Portugal. While driving up the mountain, you’ll also have a look at the characteristic old mansions from the 19th century (featured in “The Ninth Gate” directed by Roman Polanski, starring Johnny Depp).
After soaking in the history of the Palace, it’s time to relax and have free time for a lunch break. Then you’ll continue your trip towards the centre of Cascais (a cosmopolitan town with a beautiful bay). Cascais is a former fishing village, which has been able to maintain traditions through the centuries, by combining them with the aristocratic life. Set back from the Atlantic shore you will enjoy this cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Continuing with our day tour through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park you’ll enjoy the pure atmosphere of Guincho beach (place of beach fight scene in James Bond’s ‘On her majesty’s Secret Service’), ‘Cabo da Roca’ (Europe’s westernmost point), and ‘Boca do Inferno’ a tourism highlight, with a divine landscape, especially when the sea is rough, and where you can enjoy magnificent sunsets.
Finally, the return to Lisbon will be along the amazing ‘Marginal’ road, always close to the Atlantic Ocean, the white sand beaches and the magnificent 17th century Forts. This scenic drive will start at Estoril (famous for its Casino and Casino gardens) and will take you to Lisbon, where you’ll have the opportunity to visit Belém (launching point for the Portuguese discoveries, dotted with beautiful historic monuments and open riverside parks), before returning to the hotel for a deserved rest.
For this full day tour we also suggest a visit to:
‘Quinta da Regaleira’ one of the most surprising of all Sintra’s monuments. A magical place located on the outskirts of the town, it was built between 1904 and 1910, in the last days of the Portuguese monarchy.
Mouro’s Castle, well-preserved 8th century stronghold, dramatically perched on a craggy hilltop in a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty.
