Overview
Let yourself be embraced by the beauty and romanticism of Sintra, its parks, palaces and breathtaking views. You can also stare down the cliff at the Roca Cape before visiting the coastal town of Cascais and return through the scenic drive of Estoril.
What to Expect
The magical, mysterious and lush green area of Sintra was the first in Europe to be considered a cultural landscape within the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1995. Spend some time there before enjoying the sun in some of the beautiful Sintra beaches, staring down the cliff at the Roca Cape, and visiting the coastal areas of Cascais and Estoril.

May the throne of a queen be carved in stone? Is the goddess Cynthia still dancing in the Moon Mount with elves and fairies? How could a little cheese tart be used to pay rent? Come wand find out why Sintra is truly magical.

The Pena Palace is one of the most photographed in Portugal and you'll quickly know why. Standing on top of a rocky hill, it was built in the 19th century for the Portuguese royal family and it's one of the finest and earliest examples of the Romanticist Style in Europe. The nearby Mourish castle, the National Palace in the village center, Monserrate Palace and Quinta da Regaleira are other examples of the wonderful architecture in the area.  From the Mourish invasions to the Renaissance and the Romanticist style that still dominates, there's something to delight anyone here.

After immersing yourself in the village and surroundings – with some famous pastries of Sintra in between – head to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe. This is ‘where the earth ends and the sea starts’, and some centuries ago it was actually believed that the earth ended there. You can see the beaches and cliffs to the right and left, before heading to Cascais.

Passing the dunes of Guincho and the several lighthouses that still help the boats avoid the rocks and rugged sea, the tour reaches Cascais, a well known resort for the Portuguese and European aristocracy since the end of the 1800’s. Ask about a gelato and you will be surprised.

The return to Lisbon follows the seashore, through the famous Estoril Coast, known as the ‘Portuguese Riviera’. A hiding place for spies and foreign officials during the world wars, one place here was enough to inspire the first James Bond novel by Ian Fleming, Casino Royale.
