What to Expect
‘House of the Queens’ since the 13th century, Óbidos was offered by the king D. Dinis to his wife D. Isabel. It was always developed with the help and taste of the queens and still holds the image of a romantic destination. The impressive ‘village gate’ with the famous Portuguese blue tiles, ‘azulejos’; narrow streets inside the walls of the castle, with flowers covering the windows, door arches or balconies; and many churches and wonderful viewpoints to the village, land or sea mark the town, where you can also try a famous local liqueur.

Driving near the Coast, the tour passes the small bay of São Martinho do Porto before reaching Nazaré. It’s a fishing town surrounding the beach and the bay, famous for the many skirts the women wear at the same time (seven!); the restaurants with fine seafood; and the cable-car to the higher area, Sítio, where you can visit a famous sanctuary and also get the best views of the bay. Recently Nazaré got worldwide recognition because of the massive waves, some over 30 meters, surfed on the north side, a short walk or drive down from the Sanctuary of our Lady of Nazareth.

Heading inland, Alcobaça is an old town that grew around one of the most important monasteries in Portugal. The Cister monks managed an enormous property, dried swamps gaining fertile lands for settlers, and launched some of the first free schools in Europe. But even more famous than the Abbey and its architecture are the tombs of several Portuguese kings and noblemen that can be seen in Alcobaça. Especially the ones of D. Pedro and D. Inês, facing each other across the transept, waiting to reunite. They represent the greatest love story, but also tragic, in Portuguese history. In front of the monastery you can also delight yourself in one of the best bakeries of Portugal.

Batalha, a few kms North is another symbol of courage. After one of the greatest battles in Portugal, in 1385, the king D. João I ordered the construction of a monastery to thank the Virgin Mary for winning against the Spanish, who had a far superior army. The Monastery of Batalha is one of the great examples of late Gothic.

In this trail of courage, love and faith, always together, the winding mountain roads lead to one of the most impressive catholic sanctuaries in the world, Fátima, ‘Altar of the World’. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima, who is believed to have appeared in 1917 to three poor young shepherds, two girls and a boy, in a nearby area. The sanctuary is visited by six million people every year, from all over the world, mainly on the 13th day of each month, between May and October. These are days of pilgrimage, and the enormous plaza between the two basilicas is completely covered by the faithful, whether it is day or night, sun or rainy weather. Those who aren’t catholic or religious normally say they still get out of the sanctuary more appeased and relaxed.
