What You'll Do
  • Discover some of the best preserved megalithic monuments in Portugal
  • Be led by a professional guide
  • Admire the Grand Dolmen of Zambujeiro
Explore megalithic monuments with their religious meanings, the rituals of early man and the manner in which they enigmatically interact with their surroundings on a tour from Lisbon.
What to Expect
Leave Lisbon to Evora as a base for trips out into the region and discover some of the best preserved megalithic monuments. In Pavia, a dolmen set down in the middle of the village has been converted into a chapel dedicated to Saint Dinis. A little further on, the Grand Dolmen of Zambujeiro (Anta Grande do Zambujeiro), the largest in the region, portrays the most primitive dimension of these monuments to death.

Cromelechs and Menhirs symbolize the worship of life and fertility. The Almendres Cromlech is the most impressive, composed of 95 individual monoliths that blend into the surrounding trees and vegetation dated 6000 BC older than Stonehenge. Here you learn about its astronomical and religious functions. The Xerez example is more unconventional, given its unusual squared layout. En route to Monsaraz, watch out for the Menhir do Outeiro. It is not difficult to spot given its huge granite bulk reaching to about 6 m. in height.

Lunch at a typical Alentejo restaurant in Alandroal. Homage paid to the forces of nature that is still capable of ensuring nobody leaves unmoved. In the afternoon you visit the Primitive Sanctuary at Rocha da Mina where God Endovellicus was culted and learn over its legends, sacred ceremonies and rituals that were made there. Its’ a magic place within nature and rocky peaks. You will be taken back to Lisbon at the end of your trip.
