Learn the story of the Marian apparitions on an 8-hour tour of Fátima, known as the “Altar of the World.” Depart Lisbon for a scenic drive inland to Our Lady of Fátima Sanctuary and the Chapel of Apparitions, where the mysterious sightings took place.
What to Expect
Visit the “Altar of the World” where 3 children had a vision of Our Lady in 1917 in the small town of Fátima. It subsequently became an important sanctuary known throughout the world.
Depart Lisbon for the drive inland, admiring a beautiful landscape of olive groves en route. Fátima takes its name from an Arabic princess, and the daughter of Muhammad, prophet of Islam. The sleepy town was catapulted onto the world stage by the apparitions of a lady dressed in white, now known as Our Lady of the Rosary.
Construction of the Sanctuary of Our Lady began in 1928 and was consecrated in 1953. Admire the 15 church altars dedicated to the 15 mysteries of the Rosary, and a section of the Berlin Wall in the entrance.
Continue to the Chapel of Apparitions to see the tombs of the children, before moving on to the new Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity (Church of the Santíssima Trindade), constructed between 2004 and 2007. With capacity for almost 9,000 people, the contemporary building marked the 90th anniversary of the apparitions.
Enjoy some free time to attend mass or for religious purposes. Then, drive to Aljustrel after lunch to visit the homes of the children, Loca do Anjo, where the angel appeared, and Valinhos, where the 4th apparition of Our Lady took place.
