  • Sintra: Pena Palace and Park Skip-the-Ticket-Line Entrance

    4. Sintra: Pena Palace and Park Skip-the-Ticket-Line Entrance

The palace is situated in the eastern part of the Park of Pena, which one has to pass through to reach the steep ramp built by the Baron of Eschwege that provides access to the castle-like building. The palace itself is composed of two wings: the former Manueline monastery of the Order of St. Jerome and the wing built in the 19th century by King Ferdinand II. These wings are ringed by a third architectural structure that is a fantastical version of an imaginary castle, whose walls one can walk around and which comprises battlements, watchtowers, an entrance tunnel and even a drawbridge. In 1838, King Ferdinand II acquired the former Hieronymite monastery of Our Lady of Pena, which was built by King Manuel I in 1511 on the top of the hill above Sintra and had been left unoccupied since 1834 when the religious orders were suppressed in Portugal. The monastery consisted of the cloister and...

A very wonderful place that can get very busy for good reason. Buying the ticket beforehand allowed us to avoid the queue for tickets, which was quite long.

In Belem, you can also visit St. Jeronimo's monastery, the tomb of Vasco da Gama and the Maritime Museum. The audio guide is very informative and easy to understand, with pleasant intermissions featuring the local Fado music. For an additional charge of 12 EUR per person we booked the boat tour between Lisbon center and Belem as well. When we took the tour, it was quite empty, sometimes we were the only people on the bus, no doubt because of the Covid measures in Portugal scaring off foreign tourists, which is a shame!

The trip with PalmaYachts was wonderful. Our skippers Fernando and Mario where the best and created good vibes during the whole tour. All in all an amazing experience on the water, with wonderful views while the sun went down. Definitely worth the money, we‘d recommend it 100% especially when there is good weather.

Lovely end to our Lisbon trip though it might be a good idea to do it earlier as Nigel gave us some good suggestions about things to do so will just have to go back! The drinks were plentiful and the snacks were delicious! Had a go at steering the boat too. Nice group of people on board. Really enjoyed it and would recommend!

  • Lisbon 72-Hour Hop-On Hop-Off Bus, Tram and Boat Ticket

    10. Lisbon 72-Hour Hop-On Hop-Off Bus, Tram and Boat Ticket

Discover all areas of Lisbon with a combined bus, boat and tram ticket, and get access to the public transport system along the way. Explore the city’s monuments and museums in myriad neighborhoods on 3 different double-decker bus tours, a Yellow Boat tour, and a tour by historical tram. Marvel at the Manueline architecture of Lisbon's squares and avenues on the Belém Lisbon tour, and discover slick, modern buildings on the modern Lisbon bus tour. Travel back to the “Age of Discoveries” in Belém and Ajuda, and meander around the traditional neighborhoods of Alfama, Mouraria, Baixa, Chiado, Estrela, and Lapa. Take a ride on Lisbon’s oldest mode of transport and climb aboard a tram to the Castelo São Jorge. Travel through historic areas such as Mouraria and Graça. Pass under the 25 de Abril Bridge and on to Belém aboard the Yellow Boat. See monuments such as the Torre de Belém and Padrão...

The 72 hour all inclusive pass is the best value imo because you pretty much get a tour of most of the city. I unfortunately wasn't able to do the tram tour but I used my ticket to ride the city trams and that was good enough for me. my only critque is that it's hard to find the bus stops so they should try to add more specific directions on where they are.

What people are saying about Lisbon

Had a great time, Miguel was very entertaining and looked after us with drinks and a blanket for the wife (take warm clothes as mentioned!!). Although engine overheated on the way back with seaweed blocking the coolant entry, we made sail and had a gentle cruise back to port with no worries. All in all a very enjoyable 2-3 hours.

The tour was great with great tourguide Mario who knows history and surroundings very well - actually no question w/o answers... places are amazing and scenic...

A very wonderful place that can get very busy for good reason. Buying the ticket beforehand allowed us to avoid the queue for tickets, which was quite long.

Great experience, magical place. People are amazing and so helpful
