Sure a mountain bike and a trail that winds down almost 1,500 meters toward Hoover Dam, past Bighorn sheep and historic tunnels sound like great fun, but a bit hot and dusty? That's when you take the kayaks out on Lake Mead for a picnic lunch!
What to Expect
The adventure gets off to quite a start as you and your mountain bike head down nearly 1,500 feet to the base of Hoover Dam.
The trail winds past Hemenway Park, a favorite place among local Desert Bighorn sheep seeking some shade. Keep your eyes open and cameras ready, as herds gather in large numbers.
Cruise past creosote bushes and blooming cactus, through 5 historic railroad tunnels as the trail takes you right to the dam. Explore this magnificent structure, one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World, before returning to the trail.
A few more miles of biking and it's time to trade in your wheels for one of the waiting kayaks that suddenly appear. Give your legs a rest and put your arms to work.
Your destination is the Boulder Islands, where a picnic-style lunch will be served as you relax in the warm sun. Water temperatures on Lake Mead are just right for swimming, and on a hot day it is the perfect way to cool down.
Then enjoy lunch!
The wooden skeletons of sunken boats are exposed as you explore the area in your kayak. Trout and striped bass jump in the water or swim under your kayak. Enjoy a leisurely paddle back to shore to top off an extraordinary day.
Lunch includes a sandwich, a piece of fruit, veggies and ranch dip, and a homemade cookie or similar dessert.
Sandwich selections: Turkey and Cheese, Ham and Cheese, BLT, PB&J, Veggie wrap with humus and jack cheese on a tortilla, Chicken Caesar Wrap - Caesar dressing served on the side, Chef Salad with meat cheese and egg.
Dressing choices: Greek, 100 isle, ranch, blue cheese.
Sandwiches are served on wheat bread and lettuce, tomato and onion and include mayo and mustard on the side.
