Enjoy a day tour to the Southern Highland of Fjallabak to explore the wonders of Iceland's Landmannalaugar and Hekla Volcano area. Dive into a bubbling wonderland with caramel colored peaks, soothing hot springs, rambling lava flows and clear blue lakes.  Landmannalaugar, together with Hekla, an active volcano in its neighborhood, is one of Iceland's most unique destinations and a must for all who love to explore the beauty of nature. Discover one of the most active geothermal areas flanked by rhyolite mountains and steaming hot springs. Start the day with lunch and set off on a 4-hour hike through the sprawling lava fields of Laugahraun, Vondugil Canyon and up to the summit of the colorful mountain of Brennisteinsalda with its steaming vents and Sulphur deposits. Descend through the Grænagil canyon, carved as a result of geodynamic activity of mountains, volcanoes and glacial rivers. If time and weather conditions allow, climb Bláhnúkur, a circa 60,000-year-old volcano with panoramic views of the Landmannalaugar Valley.  Have a bath in a natural hot pool, where both hot and cold water flow out from beneath Laugahraun, mixing together and forming the perfect bathing conditions. After the hike you have the opportunity to bathe in the geothermal hot-spring pool, as reward for your exertions on the trails. Enjoy great views as you linger in the healing waters. We enjoy other great sights on our way to and from Landmannalaugarþ. We see the waterfalls at Hjálparafoss, Glanni and Háifoss. Háifoss waterfall is Iceland's fourth largest. We also pay a visit to Hnausapollur, an ancient crater lake formed by volcanic eruptions. Marvel at the turquoise blue hue of the water, contrasting with the desolate desert sands of the surrounding landscape. We return to Reykjavík tired but content, with memories of untouched nature to enjoy for years to come.

From Reykjavík: Landmannalaugar Hike and the Valley of Tears

3. From Reykjavík: Landmannalaugar Hike and the Valley of Tears

The Essential Landmannalaugar. Embark on a journey to one of Iceland’s most captivating destinations Landmannalaugar, located in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the Highlands of Iceland, famous for its breathtaking landscapes such as vibrant colored rhyolite mountains, bubbling hot springs, lava fields and epic hikes. The lava fields and the rhyolite mountains are the result of thousands of years of volcanic activity. Laugahraun lava field was formed in a volcanic eruption in 1477 consisting of vast erratic black obsidian which is known for its smooth, sharp edges and unique appearance, and famed in the TV series Game of Thrones as “Dragon Glass”. Rhyolite is a type of volcanic rock that is made of quartz and silica and with minerals such as iron and sulphur adding extra color to the mountains. Brennisteinsalda or “the Sulphur Wave” is a very good example of this. We will stay over 3 hours in Landmannalaugur and we offer approx. 2 hour guided hike through the obsidian fields up to Brennisteinsalda, but you are welcome to explore the area on your own within the given time frame. You can take on different trail or just relax and stay longer in the natural hot pool – just don’t forget to bring your swim suit and a towel on the trip! The natural beauty and unique geology of this area will leave you in awe and create memories that will last a lifetime. Itinerary Hjálparfoss - Help's fall Hjálparfoss is a beautiful, two stepped waterfall that cascades down into a large plunge pool that is surrounded by very unique basalt rock formations. The surrounding area is called Hjálp or “help” because when people had to travel from the north to the south over the highlands of Iceland they had to travel through the harsh and desolated Sprengisandur route. It was usually very hard to find a place in this desert route to feed the horses and when arriving to the the lush area near Hjálparfoss people thought of it as a help, because finally there was grass for the horses to bite after this long journey. Landmannalaugar - Hike and natural pool Welcome to Landmannalaugar in Iceland. We will stop here for couple of hours. The guide will offer you a hike up to Brennisteinsalda or the Sulfur Wave. During the hike your are surrounded by nature so peculiar that you would hardly be surprised if you saw an elf running by. The colorful rhyolite mountains and some small hot springs scattered all over close to Brennisteinsalda with a mystical steam rising up from them. When returning to the huts, after about two hours of hiking, there still is enough time to take a bath in the natural pool. Sigöldugljúfur - The Valley of Tears The magical Sigöldugljúfur canyon has become one of the main instagram spots in Iceland. It is quite an extraordinary natural wonder with its many small spring-fed streams, small ponds, crystal clear waterfalls, colorful vegetation, and fascinating cliffs. We do pick-up and drop-off from certain bus stops and hotels in Reykjavík.

This was by far the best experience my husband and I had during our trip to Iceland. Our guide Adam was kind, informative and efficient. We visited various destinations and had a great group! We definitely would do this tour again on our next trip. If you're looking for a laid-back adventure during your vacation, I definitely recommend checking out this tour.

Our guide Karla was very friendly and helpful. The weather was rainy. Nevertheless we enjoyed the tour very much. We specially enjoyed the dip in the natural hot spring after our hiking in the wet weather. We also appreciate that Karlo drove us to visit the Sigöldugljúfur. It was impressive indeed.

Would 100% recommend this tour. Our guide was great, knew the area very well, had a lot of insights into local life and the history of the places. We went on a very windy day with snow and sandstorms, but always felt safe with our guide.

Our guide Elyas from Southcoast adventure was excellent! Despite the rain he made the day incredible, I highly recommend an excursion with him.

We had a great time. Adam is an amazing guide. Highly recommend.
