What to Expect
Kyoto is brimming with breathtaking natural beauty and endless architectural and historical wonders – so many, in fact, that it can be difficult to decide what to see when you’re strapped for time! Today, you are taken to the best of Kyoto’s past palaces and present markets so you can experience the peaceful serenity of the Golden Pavilion, the architectural beauty of Nijo castle and the vibrant energy of Nishiki food market!

Start at the Golden Pavilion, Kyoto’s most famous sight and known throughout the world as a vision of breathtaking beauty. On calm days, the water lies still as glass, reflecting the brilliant sheen of the Pavilion’s glittering golden walls. Surrounded by picturesque Japanese gardens, this truly is a sight that represents some of Japan’s most treasured beauty and varied architecture.

From the Golden Pavilion, head south to Nijo Castle, a splendid and intricate castle complex constructed in 1626 under order of Japan’s military leader, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Nijo Castle is a masterpiece of art, design and architecture. Built almost entirely of Japanese Hinoki Cypress, the rich and dark tones of the wood offset brilliant displays of gold and green. The outer paths and gardens are tranquil and sprawling, with scenic ponds and weeping cherry blossom in abundance. The inner halls give an insight into Japan’s fascinating history, with relics from the last 400 years still preserved and intact.

From Nijo Castle, move finally to a historical area of Kyoto that is still very much alive – Nishiki Food Market. The market is a prime location for shopping Kyoto’s most famous foodstuffs, including everything ‘Matcha’ (green tea) flavored. Taking an educational walk through the market, you will have the chance to explore Kyoto’s rich and diverse food history while enjoying the unique sights and smells of Japan’s world famous culinary traditions.
