Full description

The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra Monastery is the center of Christianity in Ukraine and home to one of the biggest and most incredible cathedrals in Kyiv. It is also home to a network of mystic underground caves that hide mummies of monks and saints, much like the pyramids of Egypt. This fascinating site was voted one of the 7 wonders of Kyiv and is absolutely a must-see for any visitor to Kyiv. Founded by monks in the 11th century and laying on the picturesque Dnieper hills, the Monastery complex is a truly holy place for all Orthodox Christians in Ukraine. It is home to many majestic churches built in the Byzantine and Baroque styles. Within the monastery complex, you will also discover many museums, including the Museum of Historical Treasures and Jewellery, the Museum of Ukrainian Decorative and Applied Art and the Museum of Miniatures. Lavra is also famous for its caves with ancient crypts, which you will explore during your visit.

Excellent overview with good guide.

Our private guide, Asya, was excellent. The site is very large divided into the upper and lower parts which was managed easily in 2 hours although more time could be spent there. The optional extras offered came very cheaply and were certainly worth the effort, especially the museum of miniatures. The guide gave us very good information about everything but was also open to talking about any subjects outside the remit of the tour. At the end she also accompanied us to the Motherland monument and the War Museum as well as recommending good local eateries.

Poignant, holy spectacular!

The Kyevo Pecherska Lavra guided tour is the best way for non Kyivites to soak up the history, the architecture, the devotion and the orthodox majesty of this ancient, holy site. All the major and less well known sites were absorbed and referenced by the expert guided narrative, which gave an excellent insight into the reverence this multi purpose religious precinct has for orthodox Ukrainians. A follow up visit is considered a must to consolidate upon the wealth of substantive information offered by the guide. Essential Kiev experience!!
